Sophie Marie, Founder
Sophia Marie is founder and designer of IconaWear; a San Francisco brand that incorporates sustainable practices along with supporting creativity and individualism. She customizes second-hand clothing to make something new and unique.
Sophia Marie sources material from the scrap bins of schools/sewing studios. And also, she alters “damaged” pieces given to her by family and friends.
The technique involves: form, layer, stud, mesh, rip, re-stitch which all comes to life in a small studio located in San Francisco, California.
Sophia Marie was born, raised, and currently lives in San Francisco, California.
She has graduated with an Advanced Diploma in Fashion Business from F.B.I. [Fashion Business Institute] in Sydney, Australia. During that time she interned with various designers and learned there the vast roles in the fashion industry.
After three years in Sydney, San Francisco was calling her back. Since then, here are a few of the people Sophia has worked with since immersing herself in the fashion industry for the seventh year: FBI Institute, Myer Department Store – Fashion Shows, Josh Goot, Designer – Fashion Show, Who Magazine, Take 5 Magazine, Hussy Fashion House – Production & Development, threeasfour – New York Fashion Show, Alice & Olivia – New York Fashion Show, Pamela Love – New York Fashion Show, and Raw Artists – showcased in their fashion shows. And recently, IconaWear showed her collections at the San Francisco Sustainable Fashion Week International.
Along with running her fashion company, IconaWear, Sophia is a senior buyer/part owner of World Gate Jewelers, a personal stylist/consultant for an online app, freelance fashion stylist and a student at City College of San Francisco for Fashion Design.
Since moving back to San Francisco, Sophia started studying at City College of San Francisco to pursue her Fashion Design Certificate. As a fashion stylist and designer, she noticed that clothing was losing its unique quality and there was too much of it all around. Sophia started to play with her unwanted garments and transformed them into something better and completely awesome. People started to notice her designs and more importantly her ethos. Within one month of opening her online shop, organizations started to reach out to Sophia to showcase her work at places such as: New York Fashion Week, Vancouver Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, Oxford Fashion Week, and Raw Artists International.
Sophia takes part in flea markets and organizes clothing swaps within the Bay Area community. Her etsy and online shop presents updated, unique versions of original garments seasonally and even offers personal customization and styling services. Her skills highlight the duality in humans beings as her designs are both masculine and feminine, soft and edgy, dark and light. Sophia is aware of the importance in empowering women in her community and across the globe. She graduated from an all girls catholic school herself. At a young age she was taught the importance of unity within sisterhood. That being said, IconaWear donates a percentage of its annual gross profit to “Oasis for Girls”- an organization supporting young girls, especially young women of color who live in underserved and under represented communities in San Francisco. Sophia hopes to inspire, educate and encourage everyone to tap into their passions and become mindful to the need of sustainability in fashion.
